People suffering from chronic pain can also benefit from this massage, which is believed to be able to eliminate toxins and detoxify the organism. Among the people who regularly undergo the Hawaiian massage we also find those who enjoy excellent health but want to see their well-being and vitality further improved, with positive implications also on muscle tone and joint mobility.
From a mental point of view, at the end of a Hawaiian massage session, patients often report feelings of tranquility, optimism, serenity, calm, balance, and readiness to act. Stress is significantly reduced, the immune system is strengthened and the person learns to become aware of himself and his potential.
How Lomi Lomi massage is performed
Before starting the session, the masseur establishes a dialogue with the client in order to frame his mental, emotional, and physical situation on the basis of which he will calibrate the best approach for treatment. According to traditional Hawaiian knowledge, opposite feelings like excitement and fear ‘settle’ in the stomach, love, and pain in the heart, pride and shame in the hips, responsibility, and exhaustion on the shoulders.
On this basis, the Lomi Lomi massage, therefore, focuses on particular areas of the body.
Sessions typically begin and end with the definition of a good purpose for the individual’s healing and health. The Lomi Lomi massage is based on movements in all directions; hands, elbows, and arms are used to make dynamic and deep movements that imitate the waves of the ocean and their cyclical nature. Fingers, feet, knees, and even hot stones and sticks can also be used during practice.
Heated basalt stones with a rounded shape are often used before the massage starts, in order to relax the patient. The use of special oils allows a better sliding on the patient’s body, to allow the execution of the techniques, only wearing a drape of fabric around the hips. To create the right atmosphere and induce relaxation, special scented essences and background music are also used. Usually, the massage starts from the nape, continues along the back, then focuses on the arms, hands, legs, feet, and then affects the front part of the body.
The Lomi Lomi can also be practiced by two massagers, which stimulate simultaneously different areas of the body; the action is sometimes so fast, rhythmic and continuous, even in the presence of only one massage therapist, the client feels the sense that more people are acting simultaneously on his body. Those who undergo the massage are encouraged to focus their attention on breathing: through the inhalation, you acquire new energy, while with the exhalation you get rid of tension, stress, and negative thoughts.
The tension accumulated in the muscles, caused by particular emotional situations, is gradually released. At the same time, positive patterns are created in the sphere of the subconscious, bringing the patient into a relaxed and self-conscious state of mind that allows them to face problems previously considered insurmountable with a new vision and with greater tranquility. The patient is also given the awareness to distinguish the ‘real problems’ from anything that is not really important. The massage focuses both on the person’s body and on the ‘energy bodies’ that surround the physical one.
During the practice, the masseur moves around in a graceful and harmonious way: a real choreographic ritual that takes place to the rhythm of the Hula, the typical Hawaiian dance.
It must be said that, unfortunately, much of this was not transmitted during the passage of the Lomi Lomi in the western world. In fact, the Hawaiian massage has become very ‘fashionable’ in spas and wellness centers, and thus inevitably has lost much of its original style and conceptual basis.
