Many of our massage clients in our Raleigh, NC massage location ask us about marma points therapy. Treating Marma points has impressive therapeutic benefits. A wide variety of symptoms, from joint pain to anxiety disorder will be treated. Our expert massage therapists offer exceptional Marma point therapy.
The Marma points are specific parts of the body that are particularly vital for the health and well-being of the person, due to being connected to the circulation of Prana (It’s an energy that pulses through the body along with a network of subtle body channels).
In a way similar to that of the chakras, they do not reside in the physical body, therefore it is not possible to identify them through resonances or plates, but they represent energy centers placed in correspondence with certain organs, muscles, bones or joints.
Traditionally, these are considered as 107 points, located throughout the body, from the forehead to the feet; they must not be understood as mere physical points, but are connected to emotions, traumas, the inner world of the person; acting on a Marma does not only mean stimulating a certain organ or counteracting a specific disorder but also removing an energy block, perhaps formed years ago and causing psycho-physical problems.
These points will be stimulated either through Ayurvedic massages ( full massage, face massage, etc.) or they are treated in isolation, i.e. not within one session and without oil, but manipulated by the masseur through pressure, more or less intense than the thumb, index or middle finger, right in the area that they are located.
107 Marma points in our body
Ayurveda describes 107 points in the human body. These points come in different categories, depending on their location in the body and their interactions:
22 on the lower limbs
22 on hand
12 on the chest and abdominal area
14 on the back
37 on the head and neck.
What happens when Marmas get blocked
The Marma points are important crossing points of the Nadis (energy channels and transmitters). If the Prana flows little, it is due to the fact that Marma points are ‘closed’ and do not allow the Prana to flow throughout the body as it should. For psycho-physical well-being and organ health, Prana must flow comfortably and without stress.
Diseases and illnesses come when life energy is scarce, when it is not fully utilized or when it is concentrated in one point and the system is not strong enough to cope with the amount of accumulated Prana.
Blockages in the Marmas result in congestion, stress or tension. If they get blocked, which corresponds to the flow of movement in the chest, difficult breathing, irritable cough, deposits in the airways, depression, cardiac arrhythmia, and/or anxiety may occur. Specific symptoms can be named on each body level, pelvis, stomach, chest, neck, and head, which are associated with a blockage of the corresponding Marmas. Treatment of these blockages improves the function of the body.
The reasons of destroyed Marma
Destroyed Marmas can occur in accidents and operations. Your treatment is long-term and often only possible to a limited extent. However, blocked ones are found with almost every symptom. These blockages are more or less clearly perceptible structurally as strengths, changes in tension in the tissue, or accumulations.
The causes of blockage might be on the physical level, such as a shock or blow, as well as prolonged overload. The causal factors of blockages are usually found on the psycho-emotional level. Typical protective reactions to fear and stress include lifting shoulders, turning inward, tensing the neck, and pulling in the chest. If fear and stress are permanent, this pattern manifests itself and blocks Marmas or the flow of movements in the chest area and this can lead to cardiac arrhythmia, breathing difficulties, exhaustion, depression, and intensified anxiety states.
Permanently suppressed emotions can cause blockages in the abdominal area, which particularly affect the flow of movement in the intestines and the uterus. Another factor that sometimes exacerbates blockages is poor nutrition.
How Marma therapy works
The classic Marma therapy can help here to provide relief relatively easily. Exercises for perception, breathing, and posture or also adjusting the diet might then reduce the following common causes. The spectrum of this therapy ranges from simply freeing a joint to solving blocking behavior and stress patterns.
Marma therapy works on 3 levels:
Body: hydration, cleansing, nourishment, energy balance, the balance of the 3 doshas (vapa-pita-kapha)
Mind: strength, stability, free from doubts, balances the gunas (sattva, tamas, rajas)
Soul: increases awareness of consciousness and improves understanding of the personal spiritual path
When can you see the results
Releasing the blockages very often results in rapid symptom relief. How long the effect lasts depends on whether the cause of the blockage is still present or not. If, for example, psychological stress in everyday life, causes the shoulders to shrug and treatment of the blocked Marmas provides quick relief because the following headache is only a question of time.
The principals of the therapy
Probably the most classical and important principle of the Marma therapy for the treatment of blockages is: ‘make supple warm stretch’. Special oils help to soften or loosen the various blockages, muscular tension, slagging or facial adhesions. It improves the responsiveness of the tissues. Prepared in this way, the blockage is released manually. This can be very powerful, but also very sensitive, which depends on the strength of the blockage.
Treatment of Marma points
Acupressure massage is a gentle stimulation of Marmas. In the first stage of the procedure, the therapists warm up your body using rubbing techniques, gentle stretching, and kneading. In the second stage, there is direct work with the activation of these points. The therapy is absolutely safe and very effective. It makes the body relaxed, both physically and psychologically by removing the blockages from the Marma points, and giving the entire body strength. Marma massage is the most powerful therapeutic process that works not only at the physiological level but also reopens our energy channel.
Is Marma treatment just acupressure for the back
Vital Marma zones are located throughout the body: feet, legs, knees, thighs, abdomen, solar plexus, chest, back, hands, forearms, shoulders, neck, back of the head, jaws, eyes, crown. We always work not only with the whole body but also do an acupressure massage of the face, since there are also Marmas located there.
